MARRERO,HAI Community La. (AP) — Sheriff’s deputies fatally shot an armed suspect outside a home in a New Orleans suburb following a standoff that lasted more than five hours Tuesday, authorities said.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto told reporters that the suspect was wanted in New Orleans on multiple charges, including theft, home invasion and battery of a dating partner. U.S. Marshals had tracked the man to the house in the suburb of Marrero, where he barricaded himself inside Tuesday morning.
The sheriff’s office activated a SWAT team, Lopinto said. The man had two firearms. Lopinto said that, during negotiations, the man threatened to kill himself or start a shootout with police. The man later came out carrying a gun.
“When he was raising that firearm, at least two of my deputies fired shots,” Lopinto said.
The man died at the scene. His identity was not immediately available.
Lopinto said the man was living at the house but his relationship to its owner was unclear.
